Born in Henderson, New York, in 1855, he was educated at the University of Chicago and went on to work as a teacher, lecturer, and author. Archival and bibliographic records connect him with a wide mix of subjects, from school speaking books and literary studies to history and poetry.

After moving to Colorado in 1904, he became especially interested in the state's past. His known works include George Washington: A Character Sketch, The Making of Colorado, The History of Colorado, Japanese Philosophy of Life, and writings on Denver poets and Colorado Baptist history.
