by Eugene P. (Eugene Paul) Sheehy, Kenneth A. Lohf
Born in Minnesota in 1922, he studied at St. John's University and the University of Minnesota before building a distinguished career in academic librarianship. He became known not only as a librarian but also as a careful bibliographer and editor with a deep interest in how readers discover trustworthy information.
His name is especially linked to Guide to Reference Books, a landmark resource for librarians, students, and researchers. He served as head of the reference department at Columbia University from 1967 to 1986, and his work earned wide professional respect, including recognition from the American Library Association.
Sheehy died in 2013, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the best of reference service: clarity, patience, and a strong belief that the right source can open a whole field of knowledge.
