About the author

Born in La Rochelle in 1820, Eugène Fromentin became unusual even in his own time for moving so naturally between painting and writing. He trained as an artist and built a reputation for scenes inspired by Algeria and other parts of North Africa, drawing on journeys that deeply shaped his imagination.

As an author, he is especially remembered for the travel books Un été dans le Sahara and Une année dans le Sahel, as well as the novel Dominique. He also wrote Les Maîtres d'autrefois, a widely admired book on Dutch and Flemish painting that showed the same sharp eye and sensitivity found in his fiction.

Fromentin died in 1876, but his reputation has lasted because his books do more than describe places or pictures. They reveal a writer who looked slowly, noticed details, and turned visual experience into elegant, thoughtful prose.
