About the author

Born in La Rochelle in 1820, Eugène Fromentin built a rare double career as both a painter and an author. He became closely associated with Orientalist art, drawing on journeys in Algeria and other parts of North Africa for scenes filled with movement, light, and landscape.

Those same travels also shaped his writing. He is especially remembered for travel books such as Un été dans le Sahara and Une année dans le Sahel, where careful description and a reflective tone bring places and encounters to life. Later, he published the novel Dominique, which remains his best-known work of fiction.

Fromentin was also admired as an art critic, and his book Les Maîtres d'autrefois helped confirm his literary reputation. He died in 1876, but his work still stands out for the way it joins the painter’s eye with the storyteller’s voice.
