1819–1889
A Belgian man of letters, notary, and politician, he moved easily between public life and literature. Remembered as a friend of Hendrik Conscience, he also helped champion Dutch-language culture in 19th-century Belgium.

by Eugeen Edward Stroobant
Born in Turnhout on January 30, 1819, he was educated there and later at the city college in Diest before studying for the notariat. He went on to build a career as a notary and also served in public life as a Belgian representative.
Alongside that work, he wrote poetry, plays, and other literary pieces in Dutch. Sources describe him as a Flemish man of letters and note his friendship with Hendrik Conscience, linking him to the wider 19th-century movement for Dutch-language culture in Belgium.
He was also active in cultural advocacy in Brussels, including work connected with the revival of Dutch-language theater. He died in Brussels in 1889.
