About the author

Born in Emporia, Virginia, in 1902, Etta Belle Walker studied at the State Normal School for Women in Farmville and earned her diploma in 1922. She later published as Etta Belle Walker Northington after her marriage.

She is best known as the co-author, with Carrie Hunter Willis, of Legends of the Skyline Drive and the Great Valley of Virginia (1940). The book gathers stories connected with the Shenandoah region and nearby Virginia landmarks, mixing historical material with local tradition in a style that feels inviting rather than academic.

Walker Northington also wrote A History of the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, 1907-1957, showing a lasting interest in Virginia history and civic life. Reliable biographical details beyond these points are limited in the sources I found, but her surviving work clearly places her among the regional writers who preserved Virginia’s stories for later readers.
