About the author

Born in Toronto in 1881 as Ethel Hume Patterson, she studied at Toronto Public High School and went on to earn a BA from Victoria College at the University of Toronto. She married John S. Bennett in 1916 and appears to have spent most or all of her life in Toronto.

She is chiefly remembered for a quartet of children's books centered on Judy, including Judy of York Hill, along with later companion volumes about school and camp life. Her fiction is often noted for its spirited young heroine, strong friendships, and an easy, engaging tone.

Beyond her own novels, Bennett also worked as an editor on literary collections, including Canadian poetry and story anthologies associated with Sir Charles G. D. Roberts. No suitable confirmed portrait image was found from the pages reviewed, so a profile image is not included.
