About the author

Esther Birdsall Darling was an American author and poet whose writing grew out of an eventful life far from the ordinary. She studied at Mills College and, after her marriage in 1907, moved to Nome, Alaska, where her husband ran a hardware and expedition-outfitting business.

In Alaska, she became closely involved with sled-dog culture and helped run a kennel. That experience shaped her best-known books, including Baldy of Nome, a popular story centered on a champion sled dog, along with later northern adventure titles. She also wrote poetry connected with Alaska and became known for helping capture the spirit of early twentieth-century Nome.

Her appeal today comes from the same thing that made her work stand out in the first place: she wrote from experience. Instead of treating Alaska as a distant backdrop, she described it as a lived place, full of hardship, excitement, and strong bonds between people and dogs.
