About the author

Born in Wakefield in 1798, Esther Bakewell was an English novelist and children's writer. She was the daughter of the geologist Robert Bakewell, and reference sources consistently describe her as a writer who focused mainly on books for children.

Her best-known work is The Book of One Syllable, a striking experiment in simple language written for young readers. She also wrote Glenwood Manor-House, showing that her interests extended beyond children's literature into longer fiction for adults.

Although relatively little seems to be widely recorded about her personal life, the outline of her career is clear: she belonged to the broad tradition of 19th-century English women writers who combined instruction, storytelling, and accessibility. She died in 1873.
