About the author

Born in Leipzig on May 4, 1869, Ernst Wilhelm Bredt was a German art historian. He came from a family deeply connected to books and art: his father was the publisher Ernst Bredt, and his older brother Ferdinand Max Bredt became a well-known painter.

Bredt is remembered as a writer on art and as a conservator. Library and reference records link him to books such as Deutsche Lande, deutsche Maler, Belgiens Volkscharakter, Belgiens Kunst, and studies connected with Rembrandt, showing his interest in both major artists and the relationship between national identity and visual culture.

He died on December 2, 1938, in Percha near Starnberg. Although he is not a widely known name today, his work belongs to the world of early modern German art writing that tried to make art history vivid and accessible to general readers.
