A leading German New Testament scholar, he combined close textual study with a broad interest in early Christian history and literature. His work helped shape modern discussion of the New Testament, the Apostolic Fathers, and the world of the early church.

by Ernst von Dobschütz
Born in Halle on October 9, 1870, Ernst von Dobschütz became a German Protestant theologian and textual critic whose career took him to the universities of Halle, Breslau, and Strasbourg. He studied theology in Leipzig, Halle, and Berlin, and he was known not only as a professor but also as a widely read author and lecturer.
His scholarship focused on the New Testament and early Christianity. Readers still encounter his name in work on the Thessalonian epistles, the Apostolic Fathers, and the transmission of early Christian texts, where he brought together careful philology, historical interest, and a gift for explaining how Christian writings were received and used.
He also lectured outside Germany, including in the United States and Sweden, showing the international reach of his scholarship. Dobschütz died in Halle on May 20, 1934, but he remains a familiar name to students of biblical studies and church history.
