About the author

Ernst Frei was a Swiss author associated with Bern literary records, and available catalog sources describe him as one of the last contemporary witnesses in Switzerland who consciously experienced the Second World War. As a young man, he served on active duty and was part of the Swiss air force troops, experiences that later shaped his writing.

His best-known book is Erlebter Aktivdienst, 1939–1945, a work based on extracts from his diary. It presents the war years from the viewpoint of someone living through military service in neutral Switzerland, with attention to danger, fear, and everyday reality rather than grand historical claims.

Publicly available sources found here were limited, so many personal details of his life remain unclear. What does come through clearly is the value of his work as eyewitness writing: a personal record of wartime service and memory preserved in book form.
