About the author

Born in Huszt on June 30, 1884, Ernő Szép became one of Hungary’s distinctive literary voices as a poet, novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and journalist. English-language biographical sources agree that he came from a poor family and moved to Budapest as a young man, where he built a reputation in journalism and literature.

Accounts of his writing describe a style shaped by childhood memories, tenderness, irony, and a close eye for ordinary life. He is especially remembered for the mix of delicacy and emotional honesty in his poems and prose, as well as for plays and other works that helped make him a well-known figure in Hungarian literary culture.

Szép died in Budapest on October 2, 1953. Though not as widely known in English as some of his contemporaries, he remains an important Hungarian author, and his work continues to be translated and rediscovered by new readers.
