Born in Porto on July 31, 1857, Ernesto Silvino Dias Gomes de Castro Pires was a Portuguese poet and writer. Portuguese-language reference sources describe him as coming from a noble family background and note that he studied at Colégio da Boa Vista, where he learned French and mathematics.
Though his life was brief, he was active in literary circles. Sources credit him with directing the Revista de arte e de crítica from 1878 to 1879 and contributing to a number of journals and magazines.
His known works include Folhas dispersas, Camões e o amor, and Scintillações e sombras. He died in Porto on December 2, 1884, leaving the impression of a young author whose literary promise was cut short.
