About the author

Born in Minneapolis in 1876, Ernest Gale Martin studied physiology at Johns Hopkins University under W. H. Howell and earned his Ph.D. in 1904. He later taught at Purdue University and then at Harvard Medical School and Radcliffe College before joining Stanford University School of Medicine in 1916.

Martin was known both as a researcher in physiology and as an educator who could explain complex ideas simply. His published work includes Physiology: The Science of the Body and The Story of Our Bodies, along with earlier scientific writing such as The Measurement of Induction Shocks. He died in Santa Clara County, California, in 1934.

For audiobook listeners, his appeal lies in the way he turns science into something readable and practical. Even when writing about anatomy and physiology, he aimed at clarity rather than jargon, making his books feel like guides for curious everyday readers.
