About the author

Born in Higher Broughton, Salford, in 1880, Ernest Broxap studied history at Owens College, later part of the University of Manchester, earning his B.A. in 1900 and M.A. in 1901. He went on to build a reputation as a historian of Lancashire, especially the Civil War period.

Broxap is best known for writing about seventeenth-century northwest England, including The Great Civil War in Lancashire (1642–1651). He also worked closely with the Chetham Society, serving as its secretary from 1920 to 1940, and helped edit and introduce historical records connected with Manchester and the surrounding region.

Alongside his historical work, he was also a businessman. He died in 1963, leaving behind books and editions that remain useful to readers interested in Lancashire history, local records, and the lived detail of the English Civil War.
