by Erick Berry
Erick Berry was an American author, illustrator, and editor who wrote many children's books from the 1930s through the 1960s. She is especially remembered for Winged Girl of Knossos (1933), a retelling of Greek myth that she also illustrated and that received a Newbery Honor in 1934.
Alongside her own books, she illustrated works by other writers, including books by her husband, Best. Her career crossed writing, drawing, and editorial work, which gives her books a distinctive feel: they are imaginative, visual, and shaped by a storyteller's sense of adventure.
Berry also wrote nonfiction for young readers, including books about places such as Finland. That mix of story, history, and cultural curiosity helped make her work memorable for generations of children.
