About the author

Born in Stettin in 1876, Erich von Salzmann was a German officer and journalist. Sources consistently describe him in both roles, and his writing reflects that mix of military experience, travel, and reporting.

He is best known to many readers for Im Sattel durch Zentralasien (In the Saddle through Central Asia), an account of a 6,000-kilometer journey completed in 176 days. His published work also includes writing connected with the German colonial wars in Southwest Africa, showing how closely his books grew out of the places he had seen for himself.

Later, he worked as a journalist, including as a military contributor to the Vossische Zeitung. He died in Shanghai in 1941, leaving behind a body of work that offers a direct, often adventurous window into German travel writing and imperial-era reporting.
