About the author

Founded by Edward Payson Dutton in Boston in 1852, E. P. Dutton began as a bookselling firm before expanding into publishing after opening a New York branch in 1864. Early on, it became known for religious works and children’s literature, building a reputation that helped it grow into one of the better-known American publishing houses.

Over time, the firm broadened its list and became associated with a wide range of fiction and nonfiction. It also played an important role in bringing books to American readers through partnerships and distribution, including the well-known Everyman’s Library series.

The company changed ownership over the years, but the Dutton name endured. Since 1986, it has continued as an imprint within the Penguin publishing group, linking its 19th-century origins to modern commercial publishing.
