About the author

Founded in New York in 1852 by Edward Payson Dutton, E.P. Dutton began as a bookselling business before expanding into publishing. Over time it built a strong reputation in American trade publishing, issuing both general literature and well-known children’s books.

The firm became especially notable for publishing works that stayed in print for generations, including books by A. A. Milne and Hugh Lofting. That long life in readers’ imaginations helped make the Dutton name familiar far beyond the publishing world itself.

In the late 20th century, the company became part of larger publishing groups, and the Dutton name continued as an imprint rather than an independent firm. Today it remains part of Penguin Random House, carrying forward a legacy that stretches back more than 170 years.
