About the author

Born in Villafranca del Bierzo in 1815, Enrique Gil y Carrasco became one of the notable voices of Spanish Romanticism. He studied in Valladolid and later moved in Madrid literary circles, where he wrote poetry, criticism, travel pieces, and fiction.

He is most closely associated with El señor de Bembibre, a historical novel centered on the fall of the Templars in Spain. The book is often remembered for its blend of careful historical interest, emotional intensity, and a deep sense of place, especially the landscapes of El Bierzo that shaped his imagination.

Gil y Carrasco also worked in diplomacy, and he died in Berlin in 1846 at just 30 years old. That short life gives his career a poignant quality, but it also helps explain why he is still remembered as a gifted writer whose promise was matched by the beauty and seriousness of what he did leave behind.
