by Emma Raymond Pitman
Born Emma Louisa Raymond in Milborne Port, Somerset, on October 5, 1841, she started writing early and finished her first book at just seventeen. Later known as Emma Raymond Pitman, she built a substantial career as an English author and contributed both books and magazine pieces.
Her work shows a strong interest in biography, moral instruction, and Christian history. Among the many titles associated with her are Elizabeth Fry, Lady Missionaries in Foreign Lands, and Central Africa, Japan, and Fiji, along with writing for younger audiences.
She is remembered today as a busy and wide-ranging late 19th-century author whose books often aimed to inform as well as inspire. Reliable sources consulted here confirm her dates as 1841 to 1899, but no suitable verified portrait image was found.
