About the author

Born in London on February 22, 1812, Emily Nonnen moved with her family to Gothenburg as a child. She grew up in a multilingual, culturally active household and went on to build a varied career as a writer, translator, and artist.

Nonnen wrote fiction and memoir-like works, but translation was one of her most lasting contributions. She is widely noted for making the first Swedish translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and she also helped introduce other English-language writing to Swedish readers.

She spent much of her life in Gothenburg, where she and her family were connected with the city’s cultural life. Emily Nonnen died on January 19, 1905, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both British and Swedish literary traditions.
