A little-known Victorian novelist, she wrote dramatic, heartfelt fiction filled with peril, loyalty, and moral tests. Her books carry the energy of late-19th-century popular storytelling, from lighthouse adventures to temperance tales.

by Emily Grace Harding
Born in 1857, Emily Grace Harding was the daughter of clergyman John Harding and Louise Harding, née Elmer. She was educated at a school in Bristol and later lived in Wiltshire, where her father served as vicar of Martin.
She began publishing fiction while still in her twenties, starting with Leoline in 1877. Other known works include A Mountain Daisy (1879), Hazel; or, Perilpoint Lighthouse (1885), Robin's Promise (1889), A Noble Sacrifice (1893), and A Brave Surrender (1895). Her surviving reputation rests mainly on these lively Victorian novels, and A Noble Sacrifice remains available through Project Gutenberg.
Harding never married and appears to have spent her life living with relatives. She died on July 11, 1904, at Westward Ho, in Devon.
