About the author

Born in Hornsmühlen, Holstein, on January 5, 1827, Emilie Tegtmeyer was educated at home and then continued her studies while living with a pastor in Kellinghusen. She later worked for several years as a governess before settling in Bremen, where she lived with relatives and remained for most of her adult life.

Her writing career began with historical novels. Over time, she turned increasingly toward nonfiction and biographical writing, which is why she is remembered today as both a writer and a historian. Sources also describe her as a teacher, reflecting the practical work that supported her literary life.

Tegtmeyer died in Bremen on February 16, 1903. Though not widely known today, her career offers a clear glimpse of a 19th-century woman who built a life around education, writing, and history.
