About the author

Born in Paris in 1844, Émile Picot became a French philologist, bibliographer, and specialist in Romance languages. After earning a law degree, he worked as a lawyer before serving in diplomatic posts in Hermannstadt and Témesvar, experiences that deepened his interest in Romanian language and culture.

Back in France, he built a major scholarly career as a researcher, editor, and teacher. He was known for studies of Romanian literature and folklore, and for work on French writing of the 15th and 16th centuries, especially theater and literary history. He also served as a conservator at the Bibliothèque nationale, a role that fit his reputation as both a careful scholar and a passionate book lover.

Picot published extensively over a long career and was respected for the breadth of his learning. He died in 1918 in Saint-Martin-d'Écublei, leaving behind a body of work that still reflects a rare mix of linguistic curiosity, archival patience, and enthusiasm for forgotten texts.
