A Swedish economist and public thinker, he wrote clearly about money, politics, and everyday economic life while also teaching generations of students at Lund University. His work helped bring economic ideas to a wider audience in early 20th-century Sweden.
Born in Malmö on January 13, 1874, Emil Fritiof Knut Sommarin became one of Sweden’s notable economists. He studied at Lund University and went on to build his career there, eventually succeeding Knut Wicksell as professor of economics and financial law.
Sommarin wrote both scholarly and more accessible books, including works on economic policy, banking, and Swedish social history. His bibliography also shows a wide public interest: alongside academic writing, he published books that explained economics in a more popular way and reflected on student life, labor, and political ideas.
He remained closely associated with Lund for much of his life and was later named professor emeritus. Sommarin died on May 20, 1955, leaving behind a body of work that connects university economics with broader public debate in Sweden.
