About the author

Born in Karlsruhe in 1828, Emil Frommel became a German Protestant pastor and author. He studied theology at Halle, Erlangen, and Heidelberg, and later served in several pastorates before taking on more prominent roles in Berlin.

He also worked as an army chaplain during the Franco-German War of 1870–1871. In 1872 he was appointed court preacher in Berlin and pastor of the city garrison, positions that helped make him a well-known religious voice of his time.

Alongside his church work, he wrote stories and books that brought together everyday life, Christian belief, and a gift for clear, engaging narration. He died in 1896, and his writing still offers a window into the moral and spiritual world of 19th-century German readers.
