About the author

Born in Masku on September 12, 1852, Emil August Almberg was a Finnish author, translator, and longtime schoolmaster. He studied at the University of Helsinki, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1876 and his master’s degree in 1877, and later became a senior lecturer at the Swedish Classical Lyceum of Turku, where he also served as rector.

His writing ranged from historical and religious works to translations, including books on Jan Hus, monastic life, and early Christian history. He was also active in Finnish cultural life more broadly: he worked in journalism, wrote literary and art criticism for Uusi Aura, took a strong interest in theater, and was involved with art and educational societies in Turku.

From 1906 onward he used the surname Jalava. Remembered as both an educator and a man of letters, he helped shape Finnish literary and cultural life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through teaching, publishing, and public service.
