About the author

Born in Finalborgo on August 3, 1821, and later active in Genoa, Emanuele Celesia was an Italian historian, writer, and man of letters. Sources from Treccani and the University Library of Genoa describe him as a scholar who studied belles-lettres and law, and who built a career that mixed literary work with civic engagement.

Celesia was involved in the political climate of the Risorgimento, and he is remembered not only for writing but also for public service. The University Library of Genoa records that he served as its director from 1865 until 1889, while other reference sources note that from 1877 he was a professor of Italian literature at the University of Genoa.

His writing was wide-ranging. He is especially associated with Storia della pedagogia italiana, an early attempt to trace the history of education in Italy, and he also wrote on Italian literature and Genoese subjects, including the well-known Linguaggio e proverbi marinareschi. He died in Genoa on November 24, 1889.
