About the author

Born in 1864 on a farm near Charleston, Illinois, he studied first in local schools and at Lee's Academy in Maine before graduating from Illinois State Normal University in 1892. Archival records at Illinois State note that he later continued his education with courses at the University of Chicago and in Illinois.

He went on to become both a student and a teacher at Illinois State Normal University, where his papers and related university materials describe him as an educator connected with grammar, reading, and orthography. His books include Orthography: As Outlined in the State Course of Study for Illinois and Orthography: Comprising Phonics, Dictionary Work, and Spelling for Fifth and Sixth Grades, practical manuals aimed at school instruction.

His surviving papers include correspondence, ephemera, photographs, and materials from his travels in Europe around and after World War I, giving a fuller picture of a teacher whose work extended beyond the classroom. He died in 1938, leaving behind a body of educational writing that remained associated with teacher training and language study.
