About the author

Born Sofia Elisabet Hiidenheimo in Hämeenlinna in 1883, she was known as Elli Hiidenheimo and also used the family names Tavastähti and Tawaststjerna earlier in life. She died in Vihti in 1950. In Finland she is remembered not only as a writer, but also as a public official and member of parliament.

Hiidenheimo worked in poor relief administration and was among the early women to hold significant roles in Finland's central government. That practical experience with social questions seems to sit close to her literary work as well, giving her writing a grounded perspective shaped by real life beyond the page.

Her career crossed several worlds at once: literature, social policy, and politics. That combination makes her especially interesting today, because her books come from someone who was not observing society from a distance, but helping to shape it.
