About the author

Born in Devon in 1863, Ella Constance Sykes became known as a traveler and writer with a strong interest in Persia and Central Asia. She was educated in England and later studied at Oxford, and much of her best-known writing grew out of journeys she made in the East, often in connection with the career of her brother, Sir Percy Sykes.

She wrote books including Through Deserts and Oases of Central Asia and Persia and Its People, bringing together travel narrative, local detail, and a readable guide to the societies she encountered. Sources on her life also note that she served as Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society in the 1920s, showing that her interests were not limited to travel alone but extended into scholarship and public discussion.

Sykes died in London in 1939. Today she is remembered as one of the British women travelers and interpreters of Iran and Central Asia whose writing opened distant regions to a wider English-speaking audience.
