Born in Dublin on June 7, 1899, she became one of the most distinctive novelists and short-story writers of the 20th century. Reference works and literary organizations describe her as an Anglo-Irish author whose work often returns to two signature settings: the world of the Irish "big house" and the emotional strain of life in wartime London.
Her fiction is remembered for its finely controlled prose and its close attention to uneasy relationships, class manners, and the hidden tensions beneath ordinary conversation.
