About the author

Born in Keene, New Hampshire, in 1856, Eliza Orne White grew up in a cultured family shaped by religion, art, and literature. Her father was a Unitarian minister, and her mother was the daughter of portrait painter Chester Harding. That background seems to have fed the strong sense of character and setting that runs through her fiction.

White wrote both adult novels and children's books, publishing more than 40 books in all, including 29 for younger readers. She is especially associated with stories that draw on everyday feeling, family life, and the natural world, with The Story of a Red Deer among her best-known titles.

She died in 1947 in Massachusetts, leaving behind a large body of work that reflects the tastes of American readers across several decades. Today, she is often remembered as a versatile writer whose books brought gentleness, observation, and quiet adventure to generations of children.
