About the author

Born in London in either 1839 or 1840, Eliza F. Pollard was the daughter of surgeon Edward William Pollard. Reference works and library records differ slightly on her birth year, but they agree that she became a professional author in Victorian England and wrote under the name Eliza F. Pollard.

After working briefly as a governess, she turned to writing full time, beginning with Avice in 1864. Over the following decades she published a large body of fiction and biography for younger readers, especially historical tales such as Roger the Ranger, A Saxon Maid, The Old Moat Farm, and The Queen's Favourite. Sources also describe her as an author of biographies and historical fiction, and note that she continued publishing into 1911.

Pollard never married and is said to have adopted a daughter later in life. She died in 1911 at Cayeux-sur-Mer in France. No clearly confirmed portrait image was found during this search, so none is included here.
