About the author

Born Emilie Charlotte Elise Vogel in 1823, she grew up in a musical and educated family and first made her name as a singer. She performed in cities including Leipzig, Dresden, Halle, and Berlin, and her experience on stage gave her an insider's feel for the artistic world she would later write about.

After her marriage, she left public performance and devoted herself more fully to literature. Writing as Elise Polko, she published novels, novellas, and music-related biographical works, becoming a widely read author in 19th-century Germany.

Her books often drew on musical life and on figures she had known or admired, which gave them warmth and immediacy for readers. She died in Munich in 1899, remembered as both a performer and a prolific author who connected literature with the culture of music.
