About the author

Elisabeth Goss Stryker (May 12, 1856–September 20, 1936) was an American author whose published work centered on Christian history and missionary endeavor. She was married to Melancthon Woolsey Stryker, a Presbyterian minister who later served as president of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.

Her best-known book, A Story of One Short Life, 1783 to 1818, was published in Chicago in 1888 by the Woman’s Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions of the Northwest. Written for young readers, it recounts the life of Samuel J. Mills and explores the early growth of American foreign missions, including the formation of missionary societies and work connected with Hawaii and Africa. Stryker’s approach combined historical research with an accessible, encouraging narrative intended to inspire young people toward service and faith.
