Born Kerttu Elin Sirén in Tampere on May 29, 1903, she became known by the pen name Elina Vaara. She built a long literary career as a Finnish poet, and reference sources describe her as an important figure in the development of modern Finnish-language poetry.
Vaara was associated with the Tulenkantajat, or Torch Bearers, a literary group that brought new energy and a more modern outlook to Finnish writing. Her poetry has been described as lyrical and varied, drawing on both classical and romantic elements.
She continued publishing across many decades, and her life and work remained closely tied to Finland’s literary culture until her death in Helsinki on December 26, 1980.
