About the author

Born in Zwolle in 1861, he became a primary school teacher in Amsterdam and built his reputation by making the natural world feel close, lively, and easy to notice. Rather than treating nature as something distant or academic, he wrote for a broad audience and encouraged people to learn outdoors.

He is best remembered as a nature educator and conservationist who worked closely with Jac. P. Thijsse. Together they helped popularize nature study in the Netherlands through books, articles, and the journal De Levende Natuur, reaching many young readers as well as adults.

His influence lasted beyond his lifetime. By the time of his death in 1914, he had become an important early voice in Dutch nature education and in the wider movement to protect the natural landscape.
