About the author
Born in Zwolle in 1861, Eli Heimans became a Dutch nature educator, conservationist, and primary school teacher in Amsterdam. He is best remembered for bringing nature study out of the classroom and into parks, fields, and dunes, encouraging people to learn by looking closely at the living world around them.
Together with Jac. P. Thijsse, he played a major role in popularizing outdoor nature education through books and articles written for a broad audience. Their work helped lay the groundwork for Dutch nature conservation, and Heimans is often associated with the early movement that made natural history feel accessible, practical, and full of wonder.
Heimans died in 1914 in Gerolstein, Germany. More than a century later, he is still remembered as one of the key figures who helped shape public interest in nature in the Netherlands.
