About the author

Born on September 12, 1848, in Erzrum, Turkey, Edwin Munsell Bliss was the son of a minister connected with the American Bible Society in Constantinople. He studied at Robert College in Constantinople, later attended Amherst College, and completed theological study at Yale Divinity School.

Bliss served with the American Bible Society for the Levant and was also a Congregationalist minister. He is best remembered as a missionary writer and editor whose works helped explain the history and global spread of Christian missions to English-speaking readers.

Among his best-known books are A Concise History of Missions and The Encyclopaedia of Missions, a large reference work he edited. He died on August 6, 1919, leaving behind a body of writing that reflects both firsthand experience abroad and a strong interest in documenting missionary history.
