by Edwin Holt Hughes
Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1866, Edwin Holt Hughes entered the ministry as a young man and went on to study at West Virginia University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and the Boston University School of Theology. He served as a pastor and educator before becoming president of DePauw University and later a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Elected bishop in 1908, he took on leadership roles that reached well beyond a single congregation. His assignments included work connected with Methodist missions and church oversight in Asia, and he remained an active public religious figure for many years.
Hughes also wrote widely, producing books that reflected his interest in Christian living, young readers, scripture, and the social questions of his day. He died in 1950, leaving behind a career that combined ministry, education, and publishing.
