About the author

Born in Sarawak in 1862, the Rev. Edwin Herbert Gomes was the son of the missionary Rev. W. H. Gomes. As a young man he wrote a novel, and he later followed a missionary path himself, spending many years in Sarawak.

He is best known for books including The Sea-Dyaks of Borneo, Seventeen Years Among the Sea Dyaks of Borneo, and Children of Borneo. These works grew out of his long firsthand experience and introduced many English-language readers to the people, customs, and everyday life of Borneo as he saw them in the early twentieth century.

After his years overseas, he returned to England and served in church posts there. He died in 1944. No suitable confirmed portrait image was found during this search, so a profile image is not included.
