About the author

Born Edward Paul Levy on October 2, 1919, in New Rochelle, New York, he wrote under the name Edward Wellen and became known as an American author of mystery and science fiction. According to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, he was given the anglicized form of his mother's surname, Wellen, after his parents' divorce.

His career ran for decades, beginning in the early 1950s, and he wrote mostly short stories rather than novels. Reference sources describe his output as centered largely on mystery fiction, though he also published a notable body of science fiction, including work connected with magazines such as Galaxy and the novel Hijack.

Wellen died on January 15, 2011. Archival records at Bowling Green State University show that his papers include manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, and author notes, a good sign of just how steadily and seriously he worked over the years.
