Born in 1856 near Auburn, New York, Edward Sandford Martin was an American journalist, editor, and humorist. He studied at Phillips Academy and graduated from Harvard in 1877, where he was involved with the early Harvard Lampoon.

Martin is best remembered as a co-founder and longtime editor of the original Life magazine, helping lead it for decades. Alongside his editorial work, he wrote essays, commentary, and light verse, building a reputation for graceful, amused writing about society and everyday American life.

He died in 1939. Today he is mainly remembered as a lively literary voice of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially for the blend of intelligence, humor, and magazine writing that made him a familiar name in his era.
