About the author

Educated at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge, Edward Sydney Woods was ordained in the Church of England and went on to serve in several important roles, including chaplain of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He later became Bishop of Croydon and then Bishop of Lichfield, combining pastoral work, public speaking, and writing through much of his career.

Woods also wrote religious books for a broad audience. Works attributed to him include Knights in Armour and Modern Discipleship and What It Means, books that reflect his gift for plain, encouraging Christian teaching rather than abstract theology.

Born in 1877 and dying in 1953, he belonged to a generation shaped by major social and wartime upheaval. That background helps explain the steady, practical tone of his writing, which aimed to strengthen readers for the demands of ordinary life and faith.
