Born on October 8, 1925, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, Edward Ormondroyd was an American author of children's books. He grew up in Pennsylvania and Michigan, served for two years on a destroyer escort during World War II, and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned degrees in English and library science.

He is best known for David and the Phoenix, a fantasy novel that has stayed popular with generations of young readers. He also wrote Time at the Top, which was adapted for television, along with several other imaginative books for children.

Ormondroyd also worked as a librarian in New York State. He died on September 14, 2025, and is remembered for writing stories that feel gentle, adventurous, and full of curiosity.
