About the author

Born in 1858, Edward A. Morton worked as a dramatic author, critic, and journalist in Britain. He was active in theatrical journalism and wrote for London papers including The Referee, building a reputation in the theatre world as both a commentator and a creator.

He is best known for writing the book for the musical comedy San Toy, or The Emperor's Own, which opened in London in 1899 with music by Sidney Jones and lyrics by Harry Greenbank and Adrian Ross. The show was a major success and remains the work most closely linked with his name.

Morton died in London on July 6, 1922. He was also the father of J. B. Morton, who later became a well-known columnist and humorist.
