About the author

Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1867, Edward Latimer Beach built a long career in the United States Navy before becoming known as an author. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1888, served in major conflicts from the Spanish–American War through World War I, and later retired with the rank of captain.

His writing grew naturally out of that background. Beach published sea stories and novels, including An Annapolis First Classman and Ralph Osborn, Midshipman at Annapolis, and he also wrote the memoir From Annapolis to Scapa Flow. The mix of firsthand experience and storytelling helped give his books an easy authenticity.

After retiring from active service, he also taught history at Stanford University. He died in 1943, leaving behind both a naval career of unusual range and a body of writing closely tied to American life at sea.
