About the author

Born in 1780, Edward Jesse was an English writer on natural history whose books helped bring the habits of birds, animals, and rural life to a wide readership. His work is remembered for its anecdotal style, mixing observation with an obvious affection for the natural world.

Alongside his writing, he served as a surveyor in the Office of Works and became closely associated with Hampton Court Palace. He was involved in its restoration and presentation after the palace was opened to the public in the nineteenth century.

Jesse died in 1868, but his books remain appealing for readers who enjoy older nature writing that is curious, conversational, and full of period detail.
