About the author

Born in Yorkshire in 1780, Edward Jesse became an English writer remembered for popular works on natural history. His books helped bring close observation of everyday wildlife to general readers, especially through lively anecdotes and scenes from the countryside.

Alongside his writing, he worked in government service and was closely connected with Hampton Court Palace. He is noted for overseeing important restoration and presentation work there after the palace was opened to the public in 1838.

Jesse died in 1868. He is still of interest today as one of those 19th-century authors who made natural history feel personal, accessible, and full of curiosity rather than purely technical.
