About the author

Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Edward Caldwell Moore studied at Marietta College and Union Theological Seminary, then continued his education in Germany and at Brown University. He became known as a thoughtful scholar of Christianity and modern religious ideas.

Moore spent much of his career at Harvard, where he taught theology and served as dean of the Divinity School. He was especially interested in the history of Christian thought and in how religion should respond to the modern world.

He also wrote several influential books, including An Outline of the History of Christian Thought Since Kant and The Nature of Religion. His work reflects a lifelong effort to make religious belief intelligible and meaningful in conversation with contemporary scholarship.
