About the author

Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Edward Caldwell Moore studied at Marietta College and Union Theological Seminary, then continued his education in Germany and at Brown University. He became a Congregational minister before moving into academic life, building a reputation as a serious but accessible thinker on religion.

Moore taught at Harvard for many years, serving first as Parkman Professor of Theology and later as Plummer Professor of Christian Morals. He was also dean of Harvard Divinity School in the early twentieth century, helping shape its direction during a period when theology was engaging more directly with modern scholarship and social questions.

He is best remembered for works such as An Outline of the History of Christian Thought Since Kant and The Nature of Religion. His writing aimed to explain how Christian belief developed in conversation with philosophy, history, and modern life, making him an important guide for readers interested in liberal Protestant thought.
