by Eduardo Henrique Vieira Coelho de Sequeira
Born in Porto on December 31, 1861, he is usually known simply as Eduardo Sequeira. Sources describe him as a Portuguese naturalist, herpetologist, botanist, journalist, and writer whose work belongs to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
His books show a wide curiosity about the natural world. Among the works associated with him are Os Répteis em Portugal (1886), A Fauna dos Lusíadas (1887), Guia dos naturalistas (1887), Ninhos e Ovos (1888), À Beira-Mar (1889), Lendas dos Vegetaes (1892), and As abelhas: tratado de apicultura mobilista.
He died in Porto on November 30, 1914. For readers today, his appeal lies in the way he moves easily between observation, popular science, and literary imagination, especially in books that turn plants and animals into subjects of wonder as well as study.
